Light Rail Transit (LRT) for Sengkang & Punggol

The Bukit Panjang Light Rapid Transit System is the first Light Rapid Transit(LRT) project built in Singapore while the Sengkang and Punggol Rapid Transit Systems are currently under construction.

This paper highlights the benefits from employing the segmental construction technique in terms of alignment, safety, quality, cost and time. Although both projects adopt the segmental beam launching technique, the difference in their design, construction and implementation is highlighted. A detailed comparison on the launching gantry, pre-stressing system, segment joints and segment production methods will be discussed. The paper also highlights some of the typical problems faced in adopting segmental construction techniques in built-up areas. Amongst which is the carrying out of beam launching works across major crossings and launching of segmental beams at grade separations.
The Sengkang LRT system will serve the transportation needs of commuters in Sengkang New Town. It consists of an East and a West Loop with a route length of 11km, 14 stations and a Depot that serves both LRT systems. The 131un Punggol LRT system with 19 stations will serve Punggol commuters in Punggol 21 New Town. It consists of an East and a West Loop.
